What types of couplings are there for slurry pumps?
Elastic pin coupling
Elastic pin coupling is a common type in slurry pumps. It is connected to the two half couplings by a pin, and one end uses an elastic sleeve (usually rubber) to buffer vibration and impact. This coupling has a simple structure and is easy to install. It is suitable for small and medium-power slurry pumps, especially for occasions where transmission accuracy is not required. Its characteristics include wear resistance, low cost and easy maintenance, but attention should be paid to regular replacement of the elastic sleeve.
Diaphragm coupling
The diaphragm coupling uses a metal spring sheet (such as a stainless steel diaphragm) to transmit torque. It has the advantages of no lubrication requirement, high temperature deformation resistance, and good centering. It is suitable for slurry pumps with high speed, high precision or frequent start and stop, such as large desulfurization pumps or dredging pumps. It has a compact structure and high reliability, but the cost is relatively high.
Claw-type elastic coupling (elastic block coupling)
The claw-type elastic coupling uses an elastic block as a buffer element. It is small in size and light in weight. It is often used in small-power slurry pumps or occasions with strict space requirements. Its permissible torque is low (generally not exceeding 850N·m), and it is suitable for pumps that convey low-concentration, low-abrasive media.
Belt drive coupling
Belt drive transmits power through a V-belt, which is convenient for adjusting the working parameters of the pump (such as speed). It is suitable for slurry pumps that need to flexibly adjust the working conditions, such as the Warman series pumps. Its disadvantages are low transmission efficiency, easy loss of rotation, and easy wear of the belt. It is usually not recommended for high-power scenarios above 220kW.
Special application coupling
For high power or special working conditions (such as high interference fit), gearbox couplings or hydraulic couplings can be selected. Gearboxes are suitable for transmission systems with mismatched speeds, while hydraulic couplings can effectively buffer impact loads. In addition, plum blossom couplings and bellows couplings are occasionally used in servo systems or precision transmissions because of their ability to compensate for deviations.
Rigid couplings
Rigid couplings (such as flange couplings) directly connect two shafts without buffering functions and are only suitable for low speeds and extremely good alignment. Since slurry pumps often have vibration and shaft offset, this type of coupling is rarely used and needs to be selected carefully to avoid shaft damage. 5
The above types need to be selected in combination with the prime mover characteristics, load category, speed and environmental conditions to ensure that the coupling meets the requirements of wear resistance, impact resistance and long life.
