The auxiliary impeller of the slurry pump plays a crucial role in the operation of the pump, mainly in the following aspects:

Sealing function

One of the main functions of the auxiliary impeller of a slurry pump is sealing. It seals through hydrodynamic action and is a non-contact type seal. Specifically, air or clean water generates pressure under the rotation of the auxiliary impeller, forming a balance with the slurry at the periphery of the auxiliary impeller, thus resisting the outward leakage of liquid from the outlet of the main impeller. This type of sealing is mainly used to seal low-pressure liquids containing impurities.

Reduce the axial force

Axial force is an important factor to consider during the operation of slurry pumps. It is mainly composed of the pressure difference force exerted by the liquid on the impeller and the gravity of the entire rotating part, with the same direction of action. The resultant force is the sum of these two forces. In submersible sewage pumps, due to the large axial force, bearings are prone to damage. However, after installing a secondary impeller, the pressure difference force exerted by the liquid on the secondary impeller acts in the opposite direction to the resultant force of the above two forces, which can offset part of the axial force and thus prolong the service life of the bearings.

Energy consumption

Although the secondary impeller has significant advantages in sealing and reducing axial force, it also has some disadvantages. For example, using a secondary impeller sealing system consumes a portion of the energy on the secondary impeller, generally about 3%. However, as long as the design is reasonable, this loss can be minimized.

Other Functions

In addition, the secondary impeller also helps to adjust the flow direction of the medium and achieve secondary utilization. It can improve the efficiency of the pump by changing the flow direction of the medium, and in some cases, it can achieve secondary utilization of the medium.

To sum up, the secondary impeller of the slurry pump plays an important role in sealing, reducing axial force, adjusting the medium flow direction and energy consumption. Its application not only improves the working efficiency of the pump but also extends the service life of the equipment.
